Treasure Beach is the popular name given to a string of rustic fishing villages in the Parish of St. Elizabeth deep in the South Coast of Jamaica, it's a very well known vacation spot for Jamaican residing in Mandeville and Kingston , many have built cottages and villas to spend their weekends and holidays here .
As it is off the beaten track tourist are unaware of the exceptional natural beauty of this area , in fact the few tourist that venture this far become so fascinated by the friendliness of the local fishing and farming community to keep coming back . They try to explain by saying:
'Visitors are treated as guests not as tourists'. 'People actually remember me from a previous visit, wave hello and are happy to see me, obviously I need to come back to see how they are doing'.
Here nature is completely unspoilt , still wild, and somewhat more Mediterranean in appearance than tropical , dry not so humid , with a large variety of cactus and abundant lignumvitae trees , the beaches are still deserted or only used by fisherman , turtles are nesting here , the reefs are vibrant with life , there are not jet skis , but dolphins are a common site .
St Elizabeth Parish is responsible for much of the agricultural output of the Island , even with the lowest rainfall, and most of it's fishing too, it is well known for the hard working ethics of his locals and their friendliness that makes Treasure Beach a little oasis of 'old Jamaica' to be enjoyed by the few.
Treasure Beach started becoming a 'chic tourist destination' from the early'90s, thanks to Jake's Hotel from the inventive genius of Sally Henzell, wife of Perry Henzell, famous movie director, loved in Jamaica for the first true Jamaican movie ' The Harder They come' that introduced reggae music to the mainstream American and European audiences .
The local community is aware and very proud of their unspoilt natural environment , they are trying to preserve this treasure by promoting ecotourism , sport tourism and agro tourism.
Several organic farms have been set up and producing , delivering a fresh range of organic products straight to the visitors in their hotels or villa accomodation .
The local fisherman community is struggling to sustain itself within their traditional means due to overfishing and their income is increasingly supplemented by tourism , they are taking visitors by boat for fishing trips , for site seeing :visiting the Pelican Bar and Black River for some crocodile spotting.
Please try to support them as generously as you can during your stay , the genuine bond between locals and visitors makes Treasure Beach such a magical place and a shining example of sustainable tourism that illustrate what could be achieved in alternative to the overdevelopment of other parts of Jamaica .
As every visitor says the real treasure of Treasure Beach are the people , hard working , honest , helpful and genuine.
